Stan Zdon’s 1/4-Scale Nieuport 28
Stan Zdon, from Coon Rapids,
Minnesota, built this nice example of a
Balsa USA 1/4-scale Nieuport 28C. The
Nieuport has an 80-inch wingspan, is 61
inches long, and is powered by a Saito
150 glow-powered engine.
The model is covered with Solartex
material, painted with exterior latex
house paint, and finished in 147th Aero
Squadron markings produced by Callie
The Nieuport 28 made its first
appearance in 1917, but was rejected
by the French, who favored the stronger Spad XIII. The
Americans also wanted the Spad, but because of a shortage of
the aircraft, they were supplied with Nieuport 28s.
Although the Americans were generally happy with
the Nieuport’s characteristics because they handled and
maneuvered well, the aircraft were fragile and prone to
accidents. Former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt’s
youngest son, Quentin Roosevelt, was shot down and
killed while flying a Nieuport 28.
That’s it for now. Remember to have a safe and happy
holiday season and a wonderful new year. See you in
