In February, I went to Kansas City,
Missouri, to attend the Kansas City
Radio Control (KCRC) Swap-N-Shop.
This swap meet is one of the biggest in
the western part of the district. I would
like to thank Duane Hulen of KCRC for
providing us a spot to set up an AMA
District VI booth.
AMA Headquarters staff provided
me with flyers, educational materials,
enrollment forms, magnetic foundation
calendars, and more. Associate Vice
President Gary Himes assisted me with
setting up and running the booth.
We spoke with people on subjects
including what the FAA is doing, the
Nats, and renewing a membership
online. I enjoyed talking with members,
answering question, and listening to
concerns. It was also good seeing many
old friends. While in Kansas City, I was
able to sneak in a few flights as well.
This winter has been a bit strange—
warmer than normal, with occasionally
great days to fly in Springfield, Missouri.
And yes, I sneaked out to one of the local
fields to thoroughly enjoy the sunshine,
mid- 60° temperatures, and an afternoon
of flying and camaraderie. It just doesn’t
get better than this in February.
Many thanks to Steve Ort for
submitting this information to showcase
the Southern Indiana Flying Eagles
club. Steve is the AMA District VI
Sanctioned Event Coordinator.
The Southern Indiana Flying Eagles
is a club of 43 members located in
Seymour, Indiana. Seymour is a
community of 25,000, which lies
halfway between Indianapolis and
Louisville, Kentucky, directly off
Interstate 65. It has been an active club
since the 1980s.
The club site is located on historic
Freeman Army Airfield. It was a World
War II US Army training base for twin-engine bombers. The field is still active
today with general aviation. There is a
museum on the site that highlights its
history and the admission is free.
The Flying Eagles are fortunate to
have this site. It is flat and void of trees
and wires. There is a paved runway
and a grass runway. During events,
there is plenty of space for campers
(no hookups). There is room to offer
space for RC airplanes, helicopters,
multirotors (no FPV is allowed), and
Control Line.
The Flying Eagles club is happy
to announce that it will host the
2017 United States Scale Masters
Championships to be held September
13-16, 2017. The club also holds other
events throughout the year, including
an International Miniature Aerobatic
Club contest, the Hoosier Scale Classic
as a qualifier for the Scale Masters
Championships, a Warbird and Classics
fly-in, and a National Miniature Pylon
Racing Association Club 40 Pylon race.
If you would like your club
showcased in the District VI column,
feel free to submit a write-up and
photos to me. You can find my email
address at the top of the page.
National Model Aviation Day is set for
August, 12, 2017. The chosen suggested
charity is the AMA Foundation. More
information will be coming soon.
Happy landings!
