fiberglass hull except on the aft end of the

Access to the inside of the Lucas Oil catamaran is
gained by removing the large composite hatch. The forward
section of the interior is dominated by the impressively
robust-looking brushless outrunner motor. Both it and the
speed controller are cooled via water jackets, fed from an inlet
at the rear of the boat.
A large, standard-size servo provides the muscle necessary
to keep the boat responsive and steerable at the high speeds of
which it is capable. The preassembled wooden display stand
that AquaCraft includes in the box allows this catamaran to be
parked for prominent display when it’s not on the water.
The only items not included in the RTR box are the required
LiPo batteries, a means of recharging them, and hull tape. It
is imperative that you use a pair of two-cell packs in series
instead of a single four-cell pack.
Use a dual-output charger that can charge two LiPo
batteries simultaneously when running this boat. If you use a
single-output charger, the time it takes to replenish
the batteries will double. The Onyx 245 is a
quality, full-featured dual output charger
that costs approximately $100.
The removable fiberglass
hatch fits into an inset in the
rectangular opening in the
hull and must be sealed in
place. A special type of
tape—is used to secure
the hatch and keep the inside dry after the
two batteries are installed and the boat is powered up.
Many will ask if other types of tape can be used to seal the
hatch. Although the manufacturer would probably suggest
that you use the recommended tape, I had neglected to
order any before embarking on this project. However, as an
RC pilot, my transmitter box always contains a roll of 3M
Blenderm is the duct tape of the RC hobby, but it can be
expensive. I used the same four pieces of Blenderm to seal
the hatch on my Lucas Oil catamaran throughout an entire
boating session! It retains its tackiness through multiple
applications and I temporarily “parked” it on my truck’s
fender while swapping out batteries.
When selecting a site for boating, there are a few no-nos that
must be mentioned. You should never run a boat on flowing
water such as rivers and creeks. If something should happen
to render the boat powerless, you may end up watching your
hard-earned dollars float away. A boat of this performance
level should never be run when there are people in the water.
It is not hard to imagine the potential for injury, given the
speeds that a boat such as this can attain.
With those safety caveats aside, you can quickly prep this
big catamaran for a run.
While verifying the steering direction, I noticed that the
